Character Profile
"She reminds me of Leona, kind of. If Leona looked like she could knock out a Stolox.
That was my first thought after spending a day with this Ely person. Leona was never the captain like Ely is. She was never in charge like One, but when she did give orders, we listened. It should be an impossible coincidence that they know each other, but somehow, I'm not surprised. Five years - which may as well have been a lifetime from what I'm hearing - and Leona still has people jumping through hoops for her. Only I get the impression that Ely isn't the jumping type. No, she's getting something out of this herself. Whatever it is, it's something good. You just have to look into Ely Foxx's eyes to know she's used to getting what she wants.
You can see it in how the crew reacts to her. I've seen a fair number of women command ships before. Some are like mothers, some like soldiers, some who try to be just one of the boys. Not a small number who act like dictators because they think being a woman means they have to beat the respect out of their men. Ely's different. This crew would live and die for her, and she for them. She is their captain. Both her and her crew understand and respect that post, and do it honor. Wherever she gathered them from, and whatever they've been through together, these guys all have each other's backs, through and through. I wonder, were the Advents ever this close? Would things be different if we had been?
Captain Ely of the Liz Freighter. I don't know what's ahead of me from here on out, but it seems that, for the time being, I'm at least in capable hands." ~ Advent XI
Card Mechanics
We present another dual-type Advent this week: Captain Ely Foxx. Like Xi, Ely’s abilities focus on Gears, but her strengths and play style are very different.
An Ely deck’s goal is to get gears to the discard pile. A player can do this with two of her abilities and gain added bonuses. First, you can discard a Gear from your hand and pay an Altillium Particle Resource to pump the stats of an Armada. This ability is incredibly threatening to your opponent, as your opponent must account for the possibility you may have a Gear in your hand whenever you have an open Antillium Particle Resource. Or, you may discard a Gear from you hand and pay a Genetic Code Resource to draw another card. This is a great ability to use to get a Gear to the discard without reducing your hand size.
But why get cards to the discard pile? That’s where Ely’s third ability comes in. Pay 3 resources and exhaust Ely to grab any Antillium Particle or Genetic Code Resource that costs 3 Resources or less from the discard pile and put it in-play. This allows a player to grab whatever Gear they need for any given situation. Make sure to play many different kinds of Gears to maximize the utility of this effect. You can also surprise your opponent during their turn by using one of her discard abilities to put a Gear they didn’t know you had into the discard and then immediately put it in-play.
Throughout this week, we will be showing off some more Gear cards as well as some great Antillium Particle and Genetic Code cards. Stay tuned!
